The 1st Week of 2016-In Training

It is officially 2016! Which means most of us are diving into triathlon training a little harder now... including me!

2016 starts a big year of racing and training for me, so I thought I’d give a little glimpse of what this first week of training looked like! It was a very cold week in East Texas, but I started back on my early morning swims, enjoyed our Tuesday/Thursday Cobb spin classes, finally started watching Game of Thrones (and no, I have never seen a single episode before this week)…and much more:

Total Time/Distance for each discipline
Swim: 11,000 yards (3:18)
Bike: 7 hours, 14 minutes…Trainer week!
Run: 20.3 miles (2:49)
Total Overall Time: 14 hours, 21 minutes

It was a long week, but a very successful week of training. I am now using power for my bike workouts, meaning that I can't lollygag around on the bike anymore! My training this year is going to be much more focused, and what I believe will be much more successful, leaving me a lot stronger in a place where I was weak before. And best of all, this week made me look forward to what’s to come this year and what type of strength I will really have this season. I am lucky to be surrounded by driven individuals who truly want to see me succeed and will do anything to help me towards my goals. Truly the greatest of friends! This week was just the first of many hard days, and I am happy to say that I am ready and excited!

And if you’re really interested, here’s a little closer look at the daily workouts…

Monday: 4,000 yard swim/4 mile run (bonus: recovery boots session)

Tuesday: 3,800 yard swim/ 2 miles easy run/1 hour 10 minute spin session

Wednesday: Maintenance weights & core/ 1 hour 25 minute spin session (sweet spot watts)

Thursday: 3,200 yard recovery swim/ 3 miles pre-spin/ 1 hour 18 minute spin session/ 1 mile off the bike (+recovery boots session)

Friday: Rest day for a big weekend!

Saturday: cold weather=trainer with friends! 2 hour trainer work with focus on FTP & aerobic builds

Sunday: an even colder day but big brick session; 1 hour 45 minute spin set (FTP work & endurance)/ 10 mile run off the bike (8:14 average)

Suffer fest with my crew

Stay tuned for more updates on my season! If there's something you want to hear about, just let me know! My first taste of race season comes January 24th-the 3m Half Marathon in Austin, TX. Well, this is really just a training race more than anything, but the effort will still be there! My first big race of the year will be Galveston 70.3 on April 10th.

Happy New Year and Happy Training!
